Richard Boylan Padgett November 27, 1932 – October 3, 2023

Celebration of Life

October 28, 2023

Provided.

Richard Boylan Padgett.

Born to Deems and Mary Agnes Padgett (Gurley) in Goldsboro, North Carolina on Nov. 27, 1932. Richard died Oct. 3 at his Bear Valley Springs home.

Raised in Wilmington, North Carolina, he joined the U.S. Army in 1951, completing his service in 1955. Shortly thereafter he enrolled in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon graduation Richard was recruited by the Kern High School District to become an English teacher in Bakersfield. So began his career of 36 years in education, teaching and completing administrative tasks.

Richard is survived by his wife Janice and their family blended for 48 years: daughters Shaylah (Derek) Padgett-Weibel and Jan Elaine (Dale) Padgett Munger, sons Mark Padgett, Darrin (Rahaf) Schultz, and Nathan (Debra) Schultz. He thoroughly enjoyed his nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and his nieces and nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Anne Bond of Burlington, Vermont and his beloved oldest son Deems Padgett.

Throughout his long life Richard remained a curious learner. He continued to find humor in living and being human. He enjoyed discussing ideas, and he always enjoyed telling a good story. Richard will be much missed by those who knew and loved him.

A service to celebrate his life so well lived will be held Nov. 1 at 10 a.m., at the Bakersfield National Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Doctors Without Borders or a charity of choice.
