This is article No. 8 in a series. See previous The Loop newspaper issues for more information, education and inspiration in how Joyful Life Hypnotherapy can help you have the joyful life you deserve.

As a Registered Nurse for over 40 years, and having shared hypnotherapy for over 30 years, I am grateful and amazed with the outcomes of my hypnotherapy clients who seek hypnotherapy for medical support.

People have sought me with fears related to their diagnosis and medical treatments; fears about undergoing medical procedures; surgery or MRI; chemotherapy; fears about going to the dentist; slow wound healing; fears about dying; insomnia; panic attacks; anxiety and for pain management.

When the body is in a frightened, and fearful state of mind, it loses homeostasis, balance in our bodies systems. With the relaxed state of mind in hypnosis, the body can effectively mobilize its own healing properties. Our bodies were created to heal automatically. The greatest lie we've ever been told is the idea that our bodies cannot heal. I teach people how to control their own minds, so as to give their bodies some calm and peace. It is the most powerful self-help tool known to humanity.

What is Medical Support Hypnotherapy? Modern Medical treatments can eradicate most infections bacteria, excise tumors and reduce fractures but they cannot eliminate unhealthy attitudes that hinder healing, immunosuppressive stress or eating habits. Such results can only be achieved in the mind of the client. The great gift of therapeutic hypnosis is that it mobilizes inner resources latent in every person to aid in healing.

What is hypnosis like? Hypnosis is a natural state of mind which provides an extraordinary quality of relaxation and increased responsiveness to suggestions so you will feel more motivated to achieve your physical, mental or spiritual goals. When in hypnosis people tend to feel physically relaxed and mentally present. Everyone can learn to do it. Individual control is retained. The client's focus on positive outcomes is made easy.

Medical Support Hypnosis is an effective tool for improving the outcomes of patient care such as: speed recovery from injury, regain health from disease, prevent illness, accelerate healing, decrease stress, fear, insomnia and control pain. Medical and scientific organizations – including the American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, British Medical Association and British Psychological Society – have independently endorsed hypnotherapy as a valid form of treatment.

Great success is experienced for clients: If someone has IBS but we know the entire living of the GI tract is turning over in a week, why aren't the new cells fresh and healthy? These tissues are turning over, but too often, the person's mind is stuck in cycles of self-defeating thoughts, deep negative emotions and limiting beliefs. Every thought creates an expression in the body. A neurochemical is released. We have 70,000 thoughts per day, and 95% are the same ones over and over. Rumination. For many people, 80% of these thoughts are negative.

The key to hypnosis is in the way it works with the connection between a person's subconscious thoughts, emotions and beliefs, and his or her autonomic nervous system. Subconscious beliefs and recurring thoughts affect digestion, respiration, sleep cycles, endocrine and reproductive function. You don't have to think about it for it to function. It is all based in the subconscious. All the automatic repetitive thoughts and feelings live together. That's the mind-body connection. "Every thought creates an expression in the body. A neurochemical is released. We have 70,000 thoughts per day, and 95% are the same ones over and over. Rumination. For many people, 80% of these thoughts are negative."

Physicians refer clients to me for hypnotherapy as an adjunct, a complement to their medical experience.
