A Taste of Tehachapi: What about those strawberries?

Did you know that California produces over 91% of the strawberries in the United States?

Florida is second with a domestic winter crop. Here in California you might see strawberries year round due to our temperate climate, however, the biggest strawberry production occurs in the Santa Maria region that includes the coastal region of Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Luis Obispo, Northern Santa Barbara and Monterey County. Oxnard is considered by many to be the “Strawberry Capital of the World.” Nice having it so close to Tehachapi!

The most popular berry is the Camarosa strawberry that produces huge, juicy and sweet berries.

Ever wonder why store bought strawberries lack flavor? If they are picked when white or even partially white, they will lack a protein called Fragaria allergen 1. That protein develops in the fruit’s flesh. Without that protein the berry will not turn red. Picked without ripening will also create a lack of flavor. If you get a batch of not so sweet strawberries, toss in a bit of sugar and let them macerate.

A Taste of Tehachapi has sweet, delicious jars of strawberry jam packed full of flavor. Check out our booth in Stallion Springs at their Spring Boutique on March 25 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 27850 Stallion Springs Dr. I heard the Easter Bunny will be there for pictures!
