Navy Jet Pilot and Flight Instructor, George D. Zimmer, passed away on Dec. 12, 2022. He was born in Bakersfield in 1933 and lived there until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1953. As a young boy, he was interested in airplanes; and as a student at Bakersfield High School, he joined the Cadet Corps, an auxiliary program for students who wished to pursue military careers.
Lieutenant Commander George D. Zimmer served his country with dedication and pride, and retired in 1993 after 40 years of service. Following his retirement, he lived in Long Beach, California. He later returned to Kern County, and enjoyed his remaining years in Tehachapi.
George D. Zimmer will be buried with Military Honors at the Bakersfield National Cemetery on Feb. 24 at 2 p.m.
