Mano Lujan, owner of Red House BBQ, spoke to Tehachapi Rotarians on May 19.

Lujan has owned the popular eatery in Tehachapi for 12 years and he is also owner of The Shed across Tehachapi Blvd. where his children, Layla and Milo, started their Soup Kitchen four years ago. The two wanted to get other kids involved and at one time they served as many as 120 people on a Sunday afternoon. The project earned Layla and Milo Citizen of the Year awards in 2021. Lujan said that after COVID, the number has dwindled to closer to 20 and with Layla going off to college, there is doubt about the program continuing. Lujan also proudly announced that during the COVID pandemic, Red House had no layoffs.

Exciting changes are coming to Red House this summer. Lujan said that the restaurant will be shutting down during one week in the month of July for upgrades. Among the new changes will be the addition of a full liquor bar.

The Shed, which had been a restaurant for 40 years, is no longer to code so it can no longer be open as one. However, Lujan says he continues to use the kitchen to prepare food for the events he is catering.

The Rotary Club of Tehachapi is a volunteer service organization with the motto, "Service Above Self." The club meets on Thursdays at noon.
