Democratic Club recognizes Women's History Month

March 13, 2021

In recognition of March as Women’s History Month, Tehachapi Mountain Democratic Club invited two women from history to present their stories at the recent TMDC meeting.

The women are part of the American Association of University Women Storytellers. The group, which was started by Carol Coleman, has been showcasing women’s stories since 1995.

Laura Amstead researched and told the story of Susan and Anna Warner who were Sunday School teachers to generations of West Point cadets in the 1800s. Both women were authors, and Anna is best known for writing the words to “Jesus Loves Me.” They were honored in death as they were buried in the West Point Cemetery.

Andrea Hicks enacted the life of Dorothy Parker who was an American poet, writer and critic who led an unusual life. Andrea was in costume and appeared with backgrounds reflecting the early 20th century.

Tehachapi Mountain Democratic Club meets the first Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. During COVID restrictions, meetings are held on Zoom. The new membership year begins July 1, but it was decided to waive dues for current members who paid in 2020. New members may join now for $20 which will pay for the rest of this fiscal year as well as the next. For information, go to http://www.tehachapidemocrats.com.
