AAUW of Tehachapi

February 18, 2017

Dr. Marian Stephens talks with AAUW Program Vice-President Susie Hastings who introduced her at the February meeting.

Dr. Marian Stephens spoke to American Association of University Women at the February meeting about her experiences as a consultant to attorneys on cases concerning education. She said that attorneys certainly know the law, but they are not as familiar with the Education Code as she is. With 45 years of experience in the field of education, she is knowledgeable about school policy and administration of the Code.

Stephens did not seek this work, but it developed when an attorney contacted her for advice. From that, her reputation spread and she is frequently consulted because there are only a few people in the United States who offer this service. When a case goes to court she is often called as an "expert witness."

Dr. Stephens has been involved in over 100 cases in many states across the nation. She has testified in federal, district, and superior courts, and administrative hearings. AAUW members were fascinated with her description of cases she has been involved with and their outcome.

Membership in AAUW is open to both men and women with a 2-year or higher degree.

The March 8 meeting is a good time to join AAUW because new members may join for $65 which pays them up to June 2018. Call (571) 247-2143 for information.
