Celebration of Life

Ronald "Ron" Wayne Depew, a beloved member of the Tehachapi community, passed away on Oct. 25, at the age of 74, following a brief battle with cancer. With his smooth baritone voice, trademark beard and handsome appearance, Ron had a remarkable presence that positively impacted every room he entered. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Born on May 23, 1949, in Visalia, California, Ron was the son of Jack and Mabel Depew. He attended Mt. Whitney High School and later pursued higher education at the College of the Sequoias.

Ron proudly served in the Army National Guard from 1968 to 1974, earning an outstanding sharpshooter badge for his exceptional marksmanship skills.

Throughout his career, Ron made significant contributions to the banking industry, specializing in mortgage lending. He was a well-known local lender in the Tehachapi community, most recently with Nations Lending.

In addition to his professional achievements, Ron was deeply involved in the Tehachapi community. He served as the president of the Greater Tehachapi Economic Development Council, chairman of the board of the Greater Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce and a director of the Golden Hills Community Services District. Ron was also an affiliate of the Tehachapi Board of Realtors and a supporter of Kern County Honor Flights for veterans.

One of Ron's most significant contributions was the establishment of the Tehachapi Relay for Life program in conjunction with the American Cancer Society. Over 15 years, this annual event raised an astounding sum of over $2 million for cancer research and treatment. Ron's dedication to this cause was unparalleled.

Ron found joy in various hobbies, including fishing, camping and hunting. He was also a lover of wine and actively supported the Tehachapi Wine Growers Association and the local wineries and tasting rooms. Ron's backyard oasis, complete with a propane fire pit, elegant shade canopies and comfortable furniture, was a testament to his love for creating a welcoming environment for family and friends to enjoy.

Ron is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Doris Depew, his daughters Allison (Chance) and Melanie (Brandon), his brother Chuck (Donna), his sister Donna, his stepchildren Teddy, Trina (Robert), and Tonya, 10 grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Mabel Depew.

Ron worshipped at Tehachapi Vineyard Church, where a service will be conducted on Nov. 25 at 10 a.m. Additionally, a Celebration of Life will be held next year on Ron's birthday, May 23, 2024, at Dorner Family Vineyard in Cummings Valley.
