TVRPD votes not to continue GranFondo

Tehachapi Valley Recreation & Park District

October 23, 2021

There will continue to be a cycling event in Tehachapi in September but it will not be a GranFondo.

On Tuesday evening October 18, the Board of Tehachapi Valley Recreation and Park District voted not to have a 2022 Tehachapi GranFondo. When reaching out to areas of Tehachapi that are outside of the boundaries of the park district to help create a 100-mile ride, they found that the support was no longer there. As a result the staff did not believe they could put together a 100-mile ride nor count on the peripheral support they had in past years.

According to Recreational Manager Ashley Krempien, the T-Town Ride held on September 25 was a great success with 100 local participants for the 40- and 18-mile rides. The district would like to expand on that event and perhaps add a half-century ride while keeping it a family event. September is still the best month for cycling events. There are now 15 cycling events in California in September. When the Tehachapi GranFondo was created, there was only one other in California, in Mammoth.
