At their June 14 meeting, the Tehachapi Planning Commission approved the design and site plan for a new Resource Center being proposed by FIELD (Farmworker Institute of Education & Leadership Development). The new 5,534 square foot facility will be located at the corner of Mulberry Street and South F Street on a vacant parcel across the street from the Marriott hotel.

FIELD supports the Cesar Chavez Environmental Corps which is certified by the State of California and operates training programs throughout Kern, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties under name of Kern Service and Conservation Program (KSACC). According to information provided, "membership in the Chavez Corps and integration with the KSACC program is open to both those in need of a high school diploma as well as high school graduates up to the age of 26. Corps members selected may earn vocational and work experience credits and may also work as peer tutors in basic educational programs offered at Field Learning Centers. They work and train with graduate school level mentors and credentialed teachers to deliver instruction."

Feeling that the project would enhance the area, the Planning Commission unanimously gave their approval for the project to move forward.

The Tehachapi Planning Commission meets on the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. They are currently meeting at The BeeKay Theater, 110 S. Green St., Tehachapi.
