Pat Doody.

Elizabeth Garcia and her maltipoo Mia moved to Tehachapi in early May. She had always loved the natural setting and four seasons of Tehachapi. She decided to rent here until she can find just the right house, a project that turned out to be more involved than she expected. However, her home has a view that she loves so she can take her time.

The retired elementary school teacher was born in Mexico. She came to the United States when she was 22 years old and settled in Selma, California. She married a farmer and the couple had three sons. Two of them, now grown, are still living in Bakersfield.

Following her husband's passing, Elizabeth went back to school and got her degree and teaching credential from Fresno State University in 1971. She taught in the Bakersfield school district for over 30 years until she retired in 2002. She added that following retirement she continued with the district as a substitute teacher until 2012.

Elizabeth loves to travel and since her retirement she has traveled all over the world. She said the only continent she has not been to is Africa. One summer she even took a teaching assignment in Juneau, Alaska teaching at a Montessori School. Another summer, she worked for Princess Cruises driving a tour bus in Ketchikan, Alaska.

She has a map on her home office wall with all the places she has ever visited. She said she has been to China twice, to Machu Picchu in Peru, Iguazu Falls in Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and multiple countries in Europe. Africa is still in her sights.

Elizabeth's favorite pastimes at home are reading, sewing and handcrafts. She alters her own clothes and designs and sews jackets for Mia. She is already looking for opportunities to volunteer in Tehachapi.

We are very excited to welcome Elizabeth to Tehachapi and look forward to seeing her around the community.
