Closure of Tehachapi Humane Society

November 21, 2020

It is with great sadness that I must tell you all that the Tehachapi Humane Society will be closing at the end of the year. It is mainly due to a lack of funds and volunteers.

There is only a handful of women running it and it has been this way for years. We will not issue any more spay/neuter vouchers after November 30.

Kern County Animal Services has some programs that will help fill the void left from our closure. K.C.A.S. has low income spay/neuter vouchers available for Kern County residents (living in unincorporated areas of the county) with a $20 copay. They also have a free spay/neuter program named Save the Pitties for any Pit Bull type dogs. That program is available to all county residents. You can take your pets to any participating vets in Kern County.

For a low cost spay/neuter clinic, call Critters Without Litters in Bakersfield. Their phone number is (661) 831-6000.

There is also a Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) program for feral cats run by KCAS that goes directly through Critters Without Litters.

KCAS also has a Pet Food Safety Net program that supplies no cost, short term supplies of dog and cat food to all county residents. Food is given out on Wednesdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon at 3951 Fruitvale Ave. in Bakersfield.

You can also email KCAS at animalservices@kerncounty.com if you have questions or want to request a voucher. You can go to http://www.kerncountyanimalservices.org for much more information.

Tehachapi Humane Society will still have a Lost/Found phone line with S.T.O.P., but we don’t have the line yet. Our phone number will stay in place until February 1, 2021.

Have a Heart Humane Society, located at 1121 West Valley Blvd. next to Radio Shack, is another source to contact for animal concerns. Their telephone number is (661) 822-5683 and email is haveaheart@bak.rr.com. With Covid restrictions they are currently only open three days a week, however, they do check telephone and email messages regularly.founder of Tehachapi Humane Society
