Honey is an amazing substance. It can be used to sweeten foods and drinks, as well as be used therapeutically. Stone-age paintings show that honey has been used by humans for over 8,000 years. It's the good stuff and its appeal hasn't lessened over time.

Finding quality honey can be a daunting task. While there are local, state and federal rules regarding bees and honey production you still need to do your research to find a honey source you can trust.

For those of us in Tehachapi, we are blessed to have a trusted source of Kern Honey right here in town. Tehachapi Natural Market at 20221 W. Valley has been carrying Kern Honey almost since the day they opened their doors over two years ago.

"From the very beginning, I was looking for a legitimate source of honey that I could trust," market co-owner Teresa Dunlop said. "I wanted to find a source that followed local and state guideline so I could be sure of the quality of the honey. Luckily, several of our awesome customers recommended Kern Honey. A few phone calls later and our shelves were stocked!"

Kern Honey is located out of Bakersfield; however, their hives get to spend some time in Tehachapi. Their honey is unpasteurized and unprocessed. The Allergy Guard honey, which the market carries has pollen and trace amounts of comb, propolis and beeswax. There are no additives, and no corn syrup is placed near the hives.

"The majority of our customers who purchase Kern Honey swear that it relieves their allergy symptoms," Teresa said.

Kern Honey owners state on their website, "Allergy Guard is a tasty and healthy blend of local honeys that often includes pollen from orange, sage, weed, wildflower, alfalfa, buckwheat, cotton, almond and more. Each batch looks and tastes different, offering a larger spectrum of exposure to nectar and trace pollen when taken throughout the year. There may be truth to the theory of oral tolerance which reasons that humans become accustomed to things they ingest. That's basically what an allergy shot is, allowing the body to overcome allergens by giving the allergen in a different way. So, if people consume local pollen via pollen rich honey they ingest what may be needed to diminish allergic reactions!*"

If you're one of the lucky ones who don't suffer from allergies but love a little healthy sweetness in your drinks or food, Kern Honey is a great choice. Their honey flavor is simply delightful. But don't take our word on it. The market will happily give you a free sample so you can decide for yourself, so head on over and get some today!
