School Board updated on COVID-19 preparations

March 14, 2020

On March 13, Dr. Mary Barlow, Kern County Superintendent of Schools and Matt Constantine of Kern Public Health, issued a press release: “Although there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kern County, we are recommending that all Kern County K-12 schools, preschools and charter schools close temporarily, no later than the close of school on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. We are further recommending that Kern County public schools plan to reopen no earlier than Tuesday, April 14, 2020."

As there was the promise of ice and snow in Tehachapi, TUSD Superintendent Stacy Larson-Everson added two snow days from March 16 and 17.

The TUSD School Board held an emergency Board Meeting on Monday afternoon for a district update. The district has received a waiver to continue supplying meals to students using a drive-up/take out model. Elementary school students who receive meals at school, will still be able to receive lunch and breakfast for the following day. Pick up times are between 11 a.m. and noon and exact times should be verified through the district.

Packets of educational materials have been prepared for all K-8 students and the district is looking into distance learning possibilities. As not all students have devices, KCSOS is looking into the possibility of acquiring devices to provide equity for all students.

Where childcare has been provided in the past, Governor Gavin Newsom has calling for districts to continue to supply daycare to the extent practicable. Contact the District or schools for clarification.

It is the Governor’s intent that districts should plan for TK -12 students to make up their work at home and cover the curriculum. Grades will be due on time.

Regarding funding, Larsen–Everson said that districts will still get paid as long as they fulfill directives.
