What's Up in Bear Valley Springs?

The BVS Association meeting of Sept. 17 had a large attendance, due in part to the introduction of the public liquor license the Board is introducing. Up until now, we have been under a private liquor license. The difficulty with it is that if a non-member who is not accompanied by an Association member is served alcohol in the saloon, the dining room and the Mulligan Room could lose the license, which would affect many of us and severely impact the income of the above amenities. Wine, beer and liquor are some of the main profit making products of a restaurant and bar, if not the most profitable. The servers will continue to check amenity cards and passes. The rules have not changed regarding allowing non-members to use the facilities, but President Jim Panek made a good point at the meeting in that some of the musical groups may bring along a guest or family member. Most musical groups are non-residents. So their friends may not have a guest pass unless that friend knows someone within the valley who can sponsor them. If that person is served a drink, then the club is at risk. This is the best move. Rest assured that the Board and staff are not intending to bring in a lot of non-members.
Another issue that came up at the meeting is that the dog park has a serious lack of shade, and Molly Mackin of Tail Waggers requested some help from the board to purchase and water some trees. Between Tail Waggers, the Board and maintenance staff, they were able to come up with some satisfactory solutions, and some year soon shade will be available at the park.
Dr. Laura Amstead of the Bear Valley Women’s Club told us all of the number of contributions the club has made to the community over the 39 years the club has been in existence. Just a few of the fifteen different causes the club has supported are Girl Scouts, Friends of the Schoolhouse, donations to needy families and the hospital healthcare fund. One of the biggest causes they have provided for is scholarships for local high school students since 1987. The club has donated more than $50,000 over the years to these causes.
And finally, our past president, Larry Thompson, has moved out of state, and the Association was short one member for the Board. Because it was midterm, the Board was in a position to appoint a new member to the Board. Peggy Berman-Smith is the newest director on the BVSA Board. Congratulations, Peggy.
Bear Valley Springs is a private gated community in which the residents pay an annual association amenities fee. To participate in events, a non-member or non-resident must arrange with a friend or family member in the community for a guest pass that would permit them to engage in the activities. Guest passes will be checked.
