The Trustees of the Tehachapi Unified School District presented Certificates of Recognition to two local organizations for their service to the District at their August 27 board meeting.

Accepting the certificate for Christian Life Assembly was Laura Powers Guggemos and Misty Fuller Caudle. The church made sure that every student at Golden Hills Elementary School had a pair of new brand-name shoes. Members of the church came to the school and measured each child's foot individually. Additionally, the members painted the school bathrooms with positive messages, each bathroom was planned and painted with an appropriate theme. Principal Kendra Bailey was also thanked for encouraging the project.

Dr. Laura Amsted from the local American Association of University Women accepted a certificate for the AAUW. The group had sent five young women to Tech Trek this summer. Through hands-on problem solving and encounters with female role models in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), AAUW Tech Trek helps girls see their futures while having nonstop fun. The one week camp is designed to make STEM exciting to middle school girls. This year Grace Keller attended Fresno State and Cartlyn Chitwood, Regan Rodriguez, Annaliesse Walkins and Serenity Whitman attended camp at University of California Santa Barbara.

In other business, a change order was approved for the fire alarm system at the nearly completed Jacobsen Middle School sixth grade classroom. Project manager Rob Trost said that the project was winding down and was pleased to announce that change orders had amounted to about $60,000 or about one percent, which was exceptional. Superintendent Stacey Larson-Everson said that the project should be ready for a board walk-through in about two weeks.
