More than 1,000 people attended National Night Out in the City of Tehachapi on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

"We had a great night talking to the kids, parents and everyone who came out to say hi," said Chief Kent Kroeger.

At the San Joaquin Weather Service booth, National Nite Out attendees learned about water flow and how excess rain affects the landscape.

National Night Out was originally designed to bring the community and law enforcement together to improve relations 36 years ago. Tehachapi turned out and showed their support for public safety in a big way. More than 500 children received a free Kids I.D. Kit from the Masonic Lodge, and more than 90 children received bicycle helmets and participated in the bicycle safety rodeo. Thirty seven organizations were represented at NNO in Tehachapi's Central Park. Children climbed on fire trucks, turned on police sirens and played games with their local cops and firefighters.

"We are a community policing organization and positive interaction with the community is essential in that mission," said Kroeger.

Houchin Community Blood Bank had set a goal of 26 units of blood for the drive and that was surpassed by 40 percent. The community donated 37 units of blood, including 11 first time blood donors.

"With each unit saving three lives, 111 lives were saved tonight," said Joy Invina-Hernandez representing Houchin.

The evening concluded with a community glow stick walk around the park and a family movie.
