The City of Tehachapi is welcoming new major retailers and industries resulting in an estimated boom of more than 550 new job opportunities for our community. According to a recent California Retail Survey, Tehachapi is the 10th fastest growing retail market in the State of California. Tehachapi has become a prime location for new and expanding businesses and education plays an important role in local workforce development.

To meet the needs of our thriving community, Cerro Coso Community College in Tehachapi has designed an accelerated Business Certificate program in which students can achieve a certificate (25 units) in only 10 months. By accelerating the program, "students complete the required courses through an 8-week hybrid of online and on-campus coursework, instead of the traditional 16-week semester. Students can start the program in August and have the entire certificate completed by May in the following semester," says Lisa Stephens, director of East Kern at Cerro Coso Community College. Students can also continue on toward a Business Associate of Science degree with an additional 35 units in general education credit.

This innovative program is a great way to jumpstart your career and expand your knowledge of core business disciplines. Whether you dream of starting your own business or want to develop skills to stay competitive in today's business environment, Cerro Coso Community College's Business program prepares you to apply critical thinking skills to technical issues, make legal and ethical decisions in a business environment, analyze issues involved in operating and working in a business in complex, diverse and international environments, and demonstrate an understanding of financial management.

Joining Cerro Coso Community College in Tehachapi this fall is fulltime Business professor, Vonetta Mixon. Mixon is teaching three of the core, 8-week, Business certification courses starting with Introduction to Business (BSAD C100) on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9:10 p.m., Financial Accounting (BSAD C101) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8:05 p.m., and Introduction to Personal Finance (BSAD C110) on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9:10 p.m. (beginning Oct. 21) at the Cerro Coso campus in Tehachapi.
