Tehachapi High School teacher Teresa Coatlalopeuh and CERT coordinator Jeannie Taylor introduced the TUSD Board to the new Tehachapi Teen CERT program at their May 7 meeting. While Teen CERT is a national program, the Tehachapi group is the first in Kern County. The students are all trained in CPR, First Aid and the use of AEDs and receive a FEMA certificate from the County. Teen CERT is campus specific and its members would be used only on campus in case of emergency. They will be eligible to join adult CERT teams when they reach 18 years old. Advisor Taylor said that one of the best things about the program is that the students get exercise in critical thinking while developing their skills.
