Chiropractor returns to Tehachapi roots

May 11, 2019

Dr. Kevin Brown D.C. is descended from nine generations of physicians and that includes Tehachapi’s first Medical Examiner (1909) Newell Jonathan Brown Jr. M.D. who was his great uncle. His grandfather Newbern Nucholls Brown M.D. was a partner in San Joaquin Hospital in Bakersfield from 1929 to 1938. Both of these relatives are mentioned on the Adventist Health website. When Kevin Brown first came to Tehachapi in 2018 as a short-term substitute for a local chiropractor, he wasn’t aware of the connection although he knew his family had a history in Kern County. It was one of his patients who worked with Adventist Health that told him about the website and that his relative had a picture on the wall at the hospital. That sent him on a quest to know more.

His father had grown up on the W.S. Tevis estate known at that time as Stockdale but moved to the Los Angeles area. Kevin Brown was raised in Palos Verdes, went to college in San Diego, went into management and found he really disliked it. At a chance visit to a chiropractor in the 1980s, the doctor convinced him he could be good at chiropractic so he went back to school receiving his Doctor of Chiropractic in 1993. Once he opened his practice, he knew he had found his passion.

Dr. Brown spent 22 years running a traditional chiropractic office in Redondo Beach, with a big office and staff, and in the end he felt he had little to show for it. He closed his office and for a short period of time joined a national chain of clinics. He knew immediately that was not for him. He started a mobile clinic that ended up being too much driving so he decided to add temporary coverage to his practice. That is what brought him to Tehachapi. In the process, he fell in love with the area. At the end of his assignment, he was referred to Dr. Paul Moll who had been ill. When Dr. Moll passed away and the practice closed, Brown said he felt compelled to stay in Tehachapi and continue to serve its residents. He decided to open an office run in the simplest, most economical way possible for both his patients and himself.

Like his ancestors, Dr. Brown was drawn to the hills and valleys of Kern County. He likes to fish, hunt and hike and claims his dream home is a double wide on five acres of oak trees. He said he feels a calling to serve the residents of Tehachapi and is truly delighted to be here.
