The Tehachapi American Legion Auxiliary Unit 221 held a Good Deed Award ceremony before their regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, April 17 at the veterans Memorial Building. The American Legion Auxiliary Children and Youth Committee established the Good Deed Award in 2002 to honor the youth in our communities who have made a positive difference and who have lived up to the Auxiliary motto, "In the spirit of service, not self."

Honored this year were Layla Lujan and Milo Lujan for being instrumental in starting Layla and Milo's Soup Kitchen. The soup kitchen is held each Sunday afternoon between 3 and 7 p.m. at The Shed Restaurant.

They wanted to do something to help the homeless, persons down on their luck and senior citizens by providing a place where they can get out and enjoy a bowl of soup at no charge.

Both Layla and Milo made the commitment to be at the restaurant early each Sunday morning to start preparing soups for their customers. They use perfectly good leftover ingredients from the family restaurant that would otherwise be thrown away. Layla and Milo, with the help of some of their friends, do the serving and take care of the cleanup.

Layla was unable to attend the ceremony as she was out of town competing as a member of the Tehachapi High School Robotics Team.

It is good to know we have young people in our community who volunteer to help others.
