Ala Monroe (aka Phyllis Belcher) tells Kiwanis member, Liz Wolfe how a school was named after her.

Kiwanis members were visited by women from history as portrayed by Storytellers from American Association of University Women. During Women's History Month in March of each year AAUW members visit schools and clubs to highlight contributions women have made throughout history and are continuing to make.

Jeannette Crounse was Margaret Brown an American socialite and philanthropist. She told a fascinating account of surviving the sinking of the Titanic. Hollywood made a movie about that and called her Unsinkable Molly Brown.

Phyllis Belcher was Ala Monroe for whom Monroe School was named. Monroe began teaching at Aqueduct School in the late 1930s. The name of the school was changed to Ala Monroe Elementary School in 1960 to honor her for many years of teaching there. Monroe High School carries her name today.

Kiwanis welcomes prospective members. Call (661) 823-4848 for information about the club.
