The Tehachapi Community Church, United Church of Christ, in conjunction with Faith in the Valley Kern, will hold weekly prayer vigils throughout the period of Lent, from Wednesday, Feb. 21 through Wednesday, March 28. We call upon Majority Leader McCarthy to place a value on family unity, and to support immigrant families with a clean Dream Act. We will gather weekly outside his local district office, 4100 Empire Drive, Suite 150, Bakersfield, Calif. 93309, at 4:40 p.m. Faith in the Valley Kern, the First Congregation United Church of Christ, Emanuel Lutheran Church, St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church in Bakersfield and the Dolores Huerta Foundation will hold other vigils, Monday through Saturday evenings through March 30, alternating between the local district offices of Representatives Kevin McCarthy and David Valadao.

In September 2017, the administration discontinued DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and ramped up deportations. ICE separates families and terrorizes communities with the threats of detention and deportation, leaving families fearful and uncertain as to their futures. We stand with immigrant families and urgently request our representatives take up a clean Dream Act once again. We require a bill that provides a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients, but without demonizing or targeting other immigrants in exchange, and without holding Dreamers hostage to increased funding for more ICE boots on the ground, more beds, or funding for a border wall.

Lent is a time for repentance and for spiritual renewal. We call upon Majority Leader McCarthy and Representative Valadao to step into their Christian faith, and act to protect and preserve immigrant families and all members of our community.
