Jay Schlosser, Development Services Director for the City of Tehachapi, spoke to the Kiwanis Club at a recent meeting. Members were impressed with the number of City projects nearly completed and those in the planning stage. It was encouraging to know that most of the these projects have been funded by grants which have been obtained through the efforts of Schlosser.

The Safe Route to School project connects schools so students may walk on sidewalks to Tompkins, Jacobsen or Monroe. The cost of this effort was 900 million dollars of grant money. Another fully funded grant is the bike path currently being constructed along Tehachapi Blvd. from Hayes to Love's Truck Stop.

Schlosser was enthusiastic about the planned Park and Ride project on W. Tehachapi Blvd. It will be a place for commuters to meet and park as well as a new bus stop for Amtrak and other transportation providers. It will also create needed parking space for evening and weekend events.

In addition to managing City projects, Schlosser assists private firms through plan reviews, permitting and construction issues. He spoke about Walmart which is "permit ready". He admitted it will change the character of Tehachapi, but every effort is being made to maintain Tehachapi's small town image.

Kiwanis is interested in City affairs because of its goal to promote a safe and healthy community for children.
