On Oct. 26, 2016 civic leaders from Kern County met with the Union Pacific Railroad in Bakersfield to discuss the economic impact it has on the region.

Tehachapi's Mayor Susan Wiggins, Mayor Pro-Tem Kim Nixon and City Manager Greg Garrett met with Union Pacific's President, C.E.O. & Chairman of the Board Lance Fritz to discuss several items relating to Tehachapi.

"It was a great opportunity for the city to go over with him (Lance Fritz) and his team about proposed projects between Union Pacific and the City of Tehachapi," said Greg Garrett.

Garrett explained they discussed the safety of the rail system in place and the past derailments in the Tehachapi area as well as two proposed projects in the city limits.

Pedestrian safety was discussed with the three proposed rail crossings and fencing along the rail corridor at Green St., Hayes St. and Dennison Rd. They also discussed the proposed park and ride, parking lot and transit center on Tehachapi Blvd.

"You don't always get a chance to sit down and have a conversation with the C.E.O. of Union Pacific. We were fortunate enough to have that time with him so we can work together for the betterment of our community," said Garrett.
