First Fridays have become a popular event of fun, refreshments, hospitality and shopping at all the participating venues.

Tehachapi Museum: Hollywood memories
The saddle made by Walt's father will be showcased at the museum on First Friday.
For First Friday in October, Walt Weed wanted to share memories of his father at the Tehachapi Museum. The Museum had planned to host Walt, a few of his father’s films, and showcase a saddle made by Walt’s father. Unfortunately Walt passed away in August 2016. The museum will still exhibit the saddle and show some of the films starring Walt’s father, on First Friday, October 7, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Walt Weed was justifiably proud of his father, Leland Weed, known in Hollywood as Bob Baker, Universal’s singing cowboy. Bob Baker was home on the Hollywood range only a few years, but he still made his mark by the time he rode off into the sunset.
Born on November 8, 1910, in Forest City, IA, his family eventually moved to Colorado and then to Arizona. He enlisted in the Army when he was 18 and later, while working as a guide at Grand Canyon, met his future wife, Evelyn.
Baker made an initial name for himself on the radio. A chance audition for Universal Pictures, which was on the lookout to groom a new singing cowboy star after the meteoric success of Gene Autry, was his big break. He beat out such other hopefuls as Roy Rogers. He became the studio’s lead singing cowboy starring in a dozen western films and co-starring in several other Westerns before leaving Hollywood. In a poll in 1939, Baker was rated tenth on a list of moneymaking Western stars.
After leaving the movie industry Baker served again in the army in World War II. He then became a member of the police force in Flagstaff, Arizona. He once again served in the US Army during the Korean War and later ran a dude ranch and became an expert in leather crafts. He had a series of heart attacks towards the end of his life and died of a stroke on August 29, 1975 in Prescott, Arizona.
In addition to memories of Walt’s father, there is a special exhibit of evening handbags, and fall hats and clothing. The museum is located at 310 S. Green Street and refreshments will be served for First Friday. For more information, call the museum at (661) 822-8152.
