Thunder on the Mountain Helps Tehachapi Senior Center

Members of the Thunder on the Mountain Car Show Committee prepare for another day of raffle ticket sales in front of the Albertson's market. (Back – Kitty Young, Barbara Williams. Front – Dianne and Rufus Thomas).

Our local senior center operates on money from fundraisers and donations, and over the last seven years the Thunder on the Mountain Car Show has donated over $25,000 to the Tehachapi SENIOR CENTER.

The Senior Center, located at 500 East F Street, is not a place where old people sit and stare at each other to see who will fall asleep first. Our seniors are active! They celebrate life and they celebrate each other. The center is a place where you can improve your mental and physical fitness, have a nutritious lunch with an old friend or make new friends. Lunch is provided daily. Just make sure you make a reservation so that they don't run out of food before they get to you. The exercise classes typically have 25 – 30 participants who may stay for cards, games and lunch.

Fridays' schedule at the Senior Center includes a respite care program. If you've ever been a full time caregiver to a family member you know that you have no time for yourself. On Fridays, you may drop off your loved one at 9 a.m. and he/she will be cared for while you spend four hours doing something for yourself. They will have lunch at the center and be ready to go home at 1 p.m.

To join the Tehachapi SENIOR CENTER or for questions about the programs, contact Office Manager Annette Kirby at (661) 822-5412.

The Thunder on the Mountain Car Show committee raises money from car registration fees, raffle ticket sales and tee shirt sales. Tickets are on sale now for the big raffle that will take place at the Thunder on the Mountain Car Show during Mountain Festival weekend. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase from now through the day of the car show, August 21. Purchase a raffle ticket outside of Albertson's for a chance to win $500 cash, a 48" television, a $500 gift certificate to Albertson's, a power tool set or a barbeque. And, feel good about helping the people of Tehachapi. In addition to the Tehachapi SENIOR CENTER, money raised in 2015 was distributed to Thunder on the Mountain Scholarships, Optimal Hospice, local Salvation Army, Shop with a Cop program, Honor Flight, Tehachapi Humane Society, Wounded Hero Fund and Tehachapi Community Theater.
