Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during WWI the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and in 1971 the holiday evolved to commemorate all men and women who died while serving the United States military. The Tehachapi Lions Club remembered these brave men and women and also showed their gratitude and appreciation for their fellow Lion members who served in the U.S. military and are still with us. Blas Hernandez served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Bill Schulgen served with the U.S. Marines during the Korean War, Henry Schaeffer served in the U.S. Army after the Korean War and before the Vietnam War, Jerry Wood served in the U.S. Army Airborne from 1962-1964, Robert Hoffman served in the U.S. Air Force from 1965-1993 and was part of the Gulf War, Walt Satalino served in the U.S. Navy from 1964-1966 on the U.S.S. Ponchatoula during the Vietnam War and Ric Williams served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1978-1982.

To simply say thank you for their service does not seem enough. Because of these brave men and other men and women like them, we enjoy the freedom we have in our beautiful country. Thank you to all of our veterans for all that you have done and all that you do.
