Visitor Center a Reality

For many years, we have heard that Tehachapi will have a wonderful Visitor Center. Well, if you have recently driven past the corner of Tehachapi Blvd. and Curry St., you know that it is becoming a reality. The scheduled opening of Freedom Plaza and the Tehachapi Visitor Center is late in June.

Freedom Plaza will be a lovely parklike setting with shade, trees, tables and a play area for children. The centerpiece of the plaza will be monuments representing the five branches of our military. The Visitor Center, located at the back of the plaza, will be an information center for tourists and local residents alike.

It is currently planned for the Visitor Center to be open seven days a week from 10 to 6 p.m. It will be operated by the Tehachapi TOURISM COMMISSION and staffed completely by community volunteers. To accomplish their staffing goals, the commission is asking area businesses, organizations and residents for their assistance in staffing the center. Letters of appeal will soon be in the mail and members of the commission will be visiting our local organizations. It is hoped that scores of people will volunteer for at least one shift a month. There will even be a way to recognize businesses that agree to “loan” an employee to the Visitor Center for a four hour shift. Training will be provided.

For more information on how you or your business can be involved in this fun way to promote Tehachapi, please contact Michelle at (661)822-2200 ext. 121.
