Members of the Tehachapi High School Key Club, a service organization sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Tehachapi, shared their activities and philosophy at the Kiwanis club's Jan. 27 regular lunsheon meeting at Pacino's restaurant. Under the leadership of senior Brandon Monzon, the club has grown to 28 members this year. The Key Clubbers engage in volunteer activities in the community, including fundraising for the Eliminate program to help fight deadly neo-natal tetanus, serving at events like the Gran Fondo, delivering phone books, cleaning up the Pacific Crest Trail and teaming up with Kiwanis members on subscriber flag routes for the Flag Display Project. Proud Tehachapi Kiwanis members learned from the presentation that the first Kiwanis International Key Club began in 1925 in Sacramento., and that in 2008 Key Clubs around the world collected $1.3 million to fight AIDS in Swaziland. The THS club's faculty advisor is teacher David Crowe. The Kiwanis Club liaison is Michal Knowles. Shown, back row, l-r, Michal Knowles, Eric Bilotta (THS junior), Seth Hewett (sophomore); front row, l-r, Tulsi Mistry (jr), Brandon Monzon (sr), Aiden Moon (soph) and Aiden Keith (soph). Keith's granddad, former uber-active Tehachapi Kiwanis CLUB member Rex Moen – who married and moved to San Diego – also attended the meeting. Key Club meets every Monday at 12:45 p.m. in Mr. Crowe's room.
