Barks & Books

It's a Dog's Life

Greetings, Mutt Fans! In this month's article, I get to make a very special announcement, geared especially to Marley's Mutts' oldest and dearest friends and supporters in Tehachapi and Bear Valley. Our successful canine-assisted reading program, Barks & Books, has come to the Tehachapi Library! Our program of the same name, which we've run at Beale Library in Bakersfield for almost two years, has been a huge success! Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, kids come to Beale to snuggle up with a mutt of their choice, and read aloud to an open-hearted, nonjudgmental friend. On Monday, Sept.14, we kicked off the same wonderful program at the Tehachapi branch.

For the many kids (and parents) who've found solace in this successful formula, Barks & Books means increased reading fluency and motivation to read, and encouragement for those who are hesitant or unsure of themselves. Best of all, dogs make reading fun! We see it first-hand every time we bring our Miracle Mutts to the library. Kids who have historically been shy, who aren't thrilled with reading or are embarrassed because they aren't great at it, come to life in a whole new way when they find themselves nestled into the comfortable space where dogs and humans meet.

To get your child involved, you must call either Beale or Tehachapi Library and schedule a time slot.

Sessions in Tehachapi are held every second and fourth Monday of the month from 4 -6 p.m. Call (661)822-4938 for an appointment.

Sessions at Beale Library in Bakersfield run every second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 4 -6 p.m. Call (661)868-0701 for an appointment.

Furthermore, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP: We would love to stock the library with some bean bag chairs, big pillows, and/or dog beds to make reading time super comfy. If you have any of these items you would like to donate, please drop them off at Tehachapi Library at your convenience.

Our next session will be held on Monday, Sept. 28, 2015 at 4 p.m.
