Summer Stroll around Downtown gives a glimpse into the past - July 11

Tehachapi Heritage League

Deana Doran and Harry Rotz helped docents with their costumes. Debi Haynes will portray Grace Errea, who was well known for her ice cream sodas when she worked at Squires Pharmacy

On Saturday, July 11 have an early dinner in Downtown Tehachapi then join the Tehachapi Heritage League for a stroll through history. Meet at 6 p.m. at the Tehachapi Depot for a short presentation on the history of early buildings in the downtown area. Many of the buildings were destroyed in the 1952 earthquake but there are wonderful old photos and descriptions that will allow you to envision them again.

After the presentation the groups will walk about 8 blocks and along the way we will focus on downtown businesses; their origins, proprietors, and changes over time. Costumed docents will lead the tour and others will disclose fun bits of information as you stroll around.

The 2013 Mystery Tour focused on Victorian homes and was a sellout. This year the Summer Stroll will also feature a look inside one home to see how a Victorian family in Tehachapi might have lived. The house, owned by Charles White, has been under renovation for several years and a walk through gives a peek into the progress. The groups then return to the Depot for refreshments and a question and answer period with local historians.

This is an excellent opportunity to revisit the past and imagine how early Tehachapi appeared before the 1952 earthquake. Strollers are encouraged to wear period costumes from the 1900 to 1940 eras.

This fundraising event is limited to 50 participants, so paid reservations are required. Call the Tehachapi Museum at 822.8152 for reservations. The cost is $20 per person and includes refreshments; no children please.
