Rotary springs into action

The Rotary Club of Tehachapi has had a busy spring with several fundraising events, and we’ve also designated funds towards highly cherished projects.

First there was an Afternoon Tea at Fiddler’s Crossing and the proceeds were donated to the local Salvation Army for their after school program, plus the Rotary Board designated an additional $500 to be contributed for this purpose. The next event was a Spring Fashion Show held at the BeeKay Theater. This event not only promotes local shopping by showing just how wonderful the clothes are at Dahlia’s, The Dressing Room, Treasures eConsignment, and Tehachapi’s Own Western and Work Wear, but we raised money which was designated to Polio Plus. This contribution will help eradicate polio in the very few countries that have current cases. The work on polio is almost done and it will not be long before this disease is wiped off the face of the earth.

Rotary Club of Tehachapi sent 9 students from Tehachapi High School and members of our Interact Club to leadership camp called RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). They went through rigorous exercises to build trust, spent time with youth from all over Kern County, heard inspirational speakers and reported back to the Rotary Club on how this camp changed their life.

Spring is also the time of year that we do two of our favorite projects. We awarded 5 scholarships to graduating seniors whose applications stood out among those that applied. We feel great pride in rewarding students who have pushed themselves academically, volunteered in their community and with extra curricular activities at their school.

On the other end of the spectrum, we provided individualized books for kindergarten students to take home which included their school, teacher, pets, friends and a wonderful story to encourage reading and pride in ownership. These books were distributed at all kindergarten classes at Cummings Valley Elementary, Golden Hills Elementary and also a kindergarten class in California City.

Our partner in this program, Kiwanis, delivered books to all Tompkins Elementary kindergarten classes. Every kindergarten student throughout our district experienced the joy of receiving a book for and about himself or herself. What a pleasure to see the smiling face of each student as they were called up to get their book.

This summer you’ll see Rotarians at the Rodeo grounds when we work the food booth there during the July 4th Bad Bulls and the Rodeo on August 14 and 15. We hope you’ll stop by and visit us. We’ll also be working at the upcoming Beer and Wine Festival at the Benz Sports Complex on July 18 with a number of other incredible non profit organizations.
