Girls will attend science/math camp

Three outstanding girls from Jacobsen Middle School have been chosen to attend AAUW’s Tech Trek Camp this summer. They are: L-R: Lyndsey Shultz, Maleena Davis and Alyssa Lundberg.

American Association of University Women (AAUW) sponsors the science and math camp for local girls entering 8th grade. They spend a week living the life of a college student, complete with dormitory, dining hall and hands on labs. They are exposed to many kinds of exciting science, technology, engineering, and math. This helps them when they make education and career choices later.

The girls chosen were highly recommended by their teacher, Darcy Hubbard. They were interviewed by AAUW members and by Morgan Spencer, a former Tech Trek recipient. The team was impressed with the maturity and poise of these girls.

Each girl submitted an essay entitled “STEM in My Future”, which described their interest in math and science. The essays and answers to interview questions showed the girls already have a good knowledge of both those subjects and are prepared to learn more.

Scholarships to attend Tech Trek have been provided by AAUW Tehachapi Mountain Branch, ARTS, Science Technology Education Corporation of Tehachapi, and Tyler Nakamura of Ross II Group, Edwards.
