Tehachapi author writes to rescue pets

helley Kitzmiller, a 30 year resident of Tehachapi, has two loves: writing and rescuing pets. She began writing romance novels in the late 1970's, when there were no writing classes or conferences to help aspiring romance writers. Eager to learn, Kitzmiller used a highlighter pen to deconstruct her favorite books-a tool she still recommends to new writers.

After a few years of studying and practicing, she sold her first book and made it her goal to give readers a painless history lesson within a genre romance. Eventually, other writing venues caught her eye and Kitzmiller wrote book reviews for Publisher's Weekly, book review columns for two major Los Angeles newspapers and travel articles for Bakersfield Life Magazine.

In 2009 a new love came into Kitzmiller's life-rescuing pets. Have a Heart Humane Society was born. Today the non-profit rescue has 30+ volunteers who focus on providing mobile spay/neuter clinics to Tehachapi residents with money used from grants and donations.

"The rescue is always in need of money," says Kitzmiller, "so I decided to use my writing to help generate funds." Kitzmiller wrote two romantic short stories "Sedona Sunrise" and "A Family Affaire" and co-wrote "Oscar Goes Camping" with Gene Stirm, a photo/text book that pokes fun at campers and RVers. The sale proceeds from all three books helps pay for spay/neuter clinics. Amazon.com sells all three as ebooks for Kindle and Oscar Goes Camping is also in paperback.
