Animal Call

On Thursday September 11, 2014, at 6:37, officers from the Tehachapi Police Department were dispatched to call of a large bear sighted in the area of Jacobson Middle School. Officers located the bear on the front porch of a residence in a residential housing tract at the corner of C Street and Pepper, which is about one block from the school.

Officers attempted to contain the bear on the porch of the residence and requested an immediate response from the California Department of Fish and Game.

While awaiting the arrival of Fish and Game, the bear became aggressive and moved in the direction of by-standers and a group of children walking to school. The officers were unable to divert the bear and determined it posed an imminent threat to human safety. Officers were forced to employ the use of deadly force.

The Tehachapi Police Department is conducting a thorough review of the incident.

There were no injuries to any officers or citizens. The California Department of Fish and Game will assume control of the deceased bear for proper disposal.
