Home Depot Foundation Helps Local Veteran

People Helping People

On a beautiful November Saturday, eighteen Home Depot employees went to Veteran Becky Byrd’s house.

They installed new hardware to her kitchen drawers, a new vanity (and faucet) in daughter’s bathroom, new tub in the master bathroom, and repainted her front door (and deck). They also built her three dogs a house with awning to protect them from the elements. Everyone had a pre-assigned task, including the three children that were there with their parents.

This once-a-year event is sponsored by the Tehachapi Home Depot, The Homer Fund (Home Depot Foundation for employees and Veteran’s) and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 221.

While looking locally for a Disabled Veteran who can benefit from the generosity of The Foundation and Home Depot employees, the Auxiliary met with Becky in August and recommended her. Becky served in the US Navy right after 9/11 and has a Fourth grade daughter Stephanie. A very grateful Becky was overwhelmed by the Tehachapi Home Depot Employees generosity toward one of Tehachapi’s own veterans.

From Becky:

On Saturday Nov. 2 a group of Home Depot employees volunteered their time and came out to my house and made repairs and upgrades as part of a program to help veterans. I cannot thank all of the individuals who took time away from their lives and families to come out and help mine. I couldn’t be more proud to call myself part of this amazing community. Thank you so much to Home Depot and every one of them men, women and children who selflessly showed up to help me and my family.
