In a blink of an eye, Thanksgiving has arrived and the holiday season is in full swing. Christmas trees are sights to behold; the city is lit on every corner; hot cocoa and mulled wine are being enjoyed in coffee shops and wine tasting rooms; and children are scrutinizing their wish lists. In Tehachapi, a long-running tradition to kick off the holiday season has been the Christmas Parade. As the sun sets on the first Saturday of December, crowds huddle under warm blankets and sip hot cocoa as...

  • A season for gratitude; attracting the right things into your life

    Kim Durham-Ashton, contributing writer|Nov 23, 2024

Thanksgiving, a time traditionally focused on gratitude, can closely be tied to the Law of Attraction. This law, which asserts that we attract what we focus on, suggests that our thoughts and emotions shape our reality. When we focus on positive aspects of life, like gratitude, we draw more positivity into our experience. On the other hand, focusing on negative aspects, whether personal struggles or broader societal issues, can attract more of that negativity. Thanksgiving encourages us to refle...

  • Autumn's Golden Light

    Midge Lyndee, Book Review|Nov 23, 2024

Have you noticed the light? Though our days are now shorter, there is a golden light that drapes over our mountains and valleys during late afternoons and makes individual leaves, single blades of grass, as well as dried out bushes and dead broken branches, glow with beauty. It is like the sun is emptying its goodness upon us. Autumn is truly a special time of year. A gift. As the nation turns to the celebration of Thanksgiving, holiday tables reflect that light with candles, gleaming silver...

Jennifer Palakiko, Edward Jones Financial Advisor|Nov 23, 2024

In most walks of life, you'd probably be pleased if you could accomplish two goals with one action. That's exactly what happens when you can turn some of your retirement funds into charitable gifts that support a worthy organization while also realizing tax benefits. Here's a little background: If you haven't already withdrawn from your traditional IRA, you must do so once you reach 73, or 75 if you were born in 1960 or later. If you don't take these withdrawals - called required minimum distrib...

  • Be thankful anyway

    Mel Makaw, contributing writer|Nov 23, 2024

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and may be here by the time you read this, signaling a time of reflection and gratitude for all the many blessings we have in our lives. That may seem a little more difficult this year, especially considering the big picture, what with the United States still being so divided and all of us facing a rather unchartered and uncertain future. Things will get better, as some folks say, or they'll get worse as others say, but the thing about life is (as most of us can...

  • Great day at November Plane Crazy Saturday

    Cathy Hansen, contributing writer|Nov 23, 2024

Lots of people came out for Plane Crazy Saturday this month, even though it was colder and windy. It is so nice to see a number of aircraft on the ramp, including Dave Robbins Cessna 182. Dave works at Stratolaunch and pilots the chase plane, a Cessna Citation. We had a visitor from Germany, Joerg Schieber, who had sent an email to us in September asking if it would be possible to fly in a Cessna 150 while visiting Plane Crazy. We told him that we would try to find someone. He had earned his...

  • Thoughts on Tyson-Paul and why Netflix was the biggest loser

    Corey Costelloe, contributing writer|Nov 23, 2024

As someone who grew up watching professional boxing, and of course the likes of "Iron" Mike Tyson, I felt the need to weigh in on the events of Nov. 15, in which the former heavyweight champion came out of retirement at 58 years old to face a 27-year-old social media mogul and entrepreneur Jake Paul, who has fancied himself a fighter over the last several years. I'll start by giving both men a ton of credit, as annoying as Paul is to so many traditional fight fans, he is getting eyes back on...

  • Dress A Girl Around the World

    Susan Smith, contributing writer|Nov 23, 2024

Dress A Girl is a project started many years ago at Mountain Bible Church by Debbie Schmidt that sews little girl dresses. The finished dresses are sent out to different organizations around the world and then distributed to less fortunate little girls. I was able to distribute the dresses myself during my 2024 visit to the Phillipines. The smile on the faces shows their gratitude and I was able to share the love of Jesus Christ. I'd like to welcome two new seamstresses, Rupali and Gracy...

  • Simply Perfect for the Holidays

    Simply Perfect Gifts and Decor|Nov 23, 2024

Every year our Christmas transformation takes over more of the store, gets more elaborate and, in the end, spreads more joy. It is something we take a lot of pride in because we love to provide an experience. How many folks feel overwhelmed during the holidays shopping at crowded big box stores? How much of the spirit of giving is lost clicking through filter menus online shopping? How much connection is lost being just another transaction? We want the community to walk in and feel like they hav...
