Years ago when one traveled to Bakersfield over U.S. Highway 466, it involved going down what is now known as the “old road” which, at that time, was the only way one could get to Bakersfield. To navigate this historic road today, one must proceed west on Highway202 and turn right on Woodford-Tehachapi Road. This will put you on the old road that we all once traveled moving northwest down past Keene and into the San Joaquin Valley. On this old road was an infamous turn called Dead Man’s Curve! J...

It’s now been one full year since I moved up here permanently. ”Here” meaning country living at 4000 feet, with wind, seasons, and life-style changes. I’ve been meeting people from the community and residents from all over the greater Tehachapi region, as well as tourists and visitors who’ve come to sample wine in the tasting room at Triassic. As my family and I have spoken many times, “There’s intrigue in the people up here, and the stories of their lives add to the quality of our lives.” Whether you made a choice to move or you grew up her...
If you’re a typical consumer, the holiday season means you’ll be using your credit cards to buy gifts for those you love. Be smart about your FICO score while you’re doing your shopping. Of the five components that make a credit score, the one that weights the most is your payment history. It should go without saying that you need to make all your payments on time to keep a good credit score. How much you owe on credit accounts makes up the next 30% of your score. History shows that once you c...
