The day before Easter is always hectic. Fun, but hectic. Egg dying, food prep, covert bunny helper operations. This year I added one more item to my to do list and I'm so glad I did. Goat Yoga. California Goat Yoga holds classes in Tehachapi and throughout the state. This specific class, held at Slice of Life Enrichment School, was a little more special though. With a new family of baby goats, this was a goat pajama party, as well as a yoga class. Each little one was dressed in diapers and...
Saying Stratolaunch, the aircraft with a 385-foot wingspan, is huge is an understatement! I was between some hangars, behind the flightline fence and saw the chase plane take off, shortly thereafter I heard the six jet engines roaring with take-off power and getting closer, as it lifted from runway 30. All of a sudden I saw a gigantic shadow and as this colossal airplane became visible, I gasped – it literally took my breath away! She was climbing into the Mojave skies so gracefully. What a m...
The Tehachapi-Cummings County Water District board of directors has authorized the district to work with the city of Tehachapi to explore the development of a self-sustaining water recycling system for the municipality. Under the plan, the city would convert effluent from the waste water (sewage) plant to potable domestic water for residential use. "This would ensure that the city has water for the future," Tehachapi Public Works Director Don Marsh told the water district board on April 17. The...

The photo above shows the fishing dock that usually sits on dry land. "We are...
Two aviation related youth groups were front and center at the April 15 City Council meeting. Agenda items involving Tehachapi youth were discussed at length. The first was the Build-a-Plane project that has been under way at Tehachapi Airport for over a year and a half. Thanks to an anonymous donation through Arts, Science and Technology Corporation of Tehachapi (AST), the Tehachapi Society of Pilots has been able to purchase a kit airplane, a Zenith CH750 Cruzer for a group of high school...

Mother's Day is right around the corner, which reminds me once again of how I lucked out as far as mothers go. Mine was really something special. I write this column about looking on the bright side of things because I inherited that tendency from my mother. She was the most consistently optimistic, upbeat person I've ever known, and I'm glad to try to be like her in that respect especially. Life wasn't always easy for my mother but I don't remember her ever dwelling on the negative. She found t...

Susan Wiggins, featured speaker at the Thursday, May 2 Kiwanis Prayer Breakfast, is a civic activist whose spiritual convictions help keep the sometimes-bumpy politics in perspective. As mayor of Tehachapi, she is called upon to preside over City Council meetings that welcome public speakers who may be angry and frustrated. She must navigate the simmering tensions among the public and, at times, between members of the Council themselves. Wiggins recognizes that city councils and other civic...

I was thrilled to hear that we have a young team of future aeronautical engineers building an airplane here at our local airport. It is a lightweight sport aircraft that weighs about 800-pounds empty. This is a special class of airplane created by the Federal Aviation Administration with the intention of providing low cost entry into aviation. Another bonus is that this plane only requires a permit to fly. The 115 horsepower engine was built in Belgium and is totally computerized. The parts for...
Each May, members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 221, along with members of the American Legion Post, offer poppies to the community to remember those who have given their lives in service to our country. During WWI, the bright red poppies flowering in the spring on the battlefields of the Western Front became synonymous with the casualties of war. The following poem, written in 1915 by Canadian Lt.Col. John McCrae, M.D., ingrained the poppy in our minds. The poppy became the memorial flower...
California State Park’s Antelope Valley Indian Museum State Historic Park (SHP) and Friends of the Antelope Valley Indian Museum will host a performance of the “Owl and the Bear” based on Ted Garcia’s version of a traditional Chumash story under the sky on Saturday, May 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. Local Antelope Valley children will perform the play outdoors at the “Little Theatre of the Standing Rocks.” The “Owl and the Bear” is a cautionary tale about the perils of vanity in which Muhu the Owl’s need for admiration leads to her good looks being crush...
A few weeks ago I wrote of the Mojave Gold Rush and the discovery of the Golden Queen Mine that caused people from far an near to come to Mojave and hope to find such a bonanza as George Holmes. The following story gives one a glimpse of the same area during The Roaring Twenties. The busy little desert community of Mojave, in the late 1920s, had a population of maybe 500 friendly souls and was known for gale-force wind storms, extreme summer heat, gold mining and was also the terminus for...

The work was commissioned by and dedicated to music director and concertmaster of the Theater an der Wien, 21-year-old Fran...
Sorrel has been a favorite culinary herb in Europe for centuries. It leafs out in the early spring when the lemony taste is at its peak. The flavor dissipates and it becomes tough in the hot weather. Rumex acetosa, garden sorrel and the French, rumex sculatus are the best varieties for cooking. The latter has a stronger lemon taste, and is less acidic. Sorrel adds pungency to mixed green salads, vegetables, sandwiches, soups, egg dishes, soft cheese and sauces for strong meat and fish (recipe)....
