After a long wait, the election results were certified. The CSD office in Bear Valley Springs was the site of the swearing in of three candidates who won the seats on the board. The three final candidates are incumbent Terry Quinn, Martin Hernandez and Geva Frevert. At a special Board Meeting on Dec. 21, with a full house of community supporters, Director of Human Resources, and Assistant to the General Manager, Kristy McEwan, swore in these new Directors for the Board. Acting President, Terry Q...
On Nov. 10, a large crowd gathered at the CSD meeting to welcome our newest member of the BVPD. Chief Dan Suttles swore in Imelda Rizo, our first woman on the force. She spent most of her childhood in California City, and graduated from Mojave High School. She knew from an early age that she wanted to work in law enforcement. Originally, she was assigned to Los Angeles County's maximum security jail. She spent almost 15 years with LASD. She was promoted to Senior Deputy and oversaw a unit that...
Chris Morales is the Executive Producer of the Tehachapi Community Theatre Association. In a recent interview she shared the following story with me. Chris grew up with the theatre. She was almost born on-stage and her father has long been involved with the entertainment industry. In fact, Chris compared her parents to Ricky and Lucy Riccardo where Ricky was in the industry, and Lucy kept wanting to get involved, but Ricky would say, "No, no, now you just stay home with our baby." But her mom...
Some autumn weather is beginning to appear. Mainly, we need moisture. The election is nearly upon us. And two important measures for our community are on the ballot, Measures V and W. Passing them will help ensure the future and well-being of the community. Otherwise our infrastructure will crumble and our CSD reserve account will be in the red. Unfortunately, the election board caused a typo in each of the measures which confuses the issue. They hope to have it resolved by Nov. 8. On Oct. 20, a large, well-behaved crowd turned out for the...
For the past six or seven years dance aerobics at the Whiting Center has been led by a spirited lady, Teresa Scognamillo. A close-knit group of women have enjoyed the class over the years and had many laughs together, as well as tear of grief on occasion. Now, Teresa is leaving and moving back to her home state of North Carolina to be closer to her ailing mother and her passel of sisters. Her class wishes her well on her new adventure, and will miss her enjoyable classes. Happy trails, Teresa....
Way back in 1995, Barbara Allen and others decided that Tehachapi needed its own kennel club, and thus, Tehachapi Dog Fanciers was born. It was never meant for fancy breeds only, but intended to encompass all dogs – anything from Labradoodles to mutts. Revenue was hard to come by, so Barbara Allen started obedience classes for a small sum. Many dogs need to learn socialization and limits. Teri Kahn and her husband had a Dalmatian who was a holy terror, so she decided that the dog needed some con...
The BVSA has changed their meeting day for the regular open meetings to the fourth Tuesday of the month, still at 6 p.m. at the Oak Tree Country Club. If you want to know what decisions are being made regarding our community, consider attending a meeting or two. Summer is coming to a close, and with it, the Friday night movies at Cub Lake. The last movie will be on Aug. 26 and is “Jurassic Park Dominion.” Also coming to an end will be the open pool swim. Sept. 6 will be the last day. Water aerob...
The main issue occupying the minds of our valley these days, aside from bear break-ins, is the issue of a raised tax to fund the police department and the gate. On Thursday, July 14, an overflow crowd turned up for the deciding CSD meeting on whether to put the proposed tax on the ballot for November. A few members of the community rose to send pleas to the Board to do what we can to protect our police protection and to fund our gate. Most of the community has come to the realization that the ca...
The Association elections are over. Three seats were up for grabs. Guy Munday won the most votes followed by Peggy Bergman-Smith and Jim Panek. Congratulations to you all. And thank you for stepping up again. Jim Panek wasn’t a current incumbent, but is well-known for having served previously. Guy Munday and Peggy Bergman-Smith will resume their service. The kids are out of school, and well into swimming lessons at our community pool. The swim team is at practice each morning, as well. And then, the ever-popular water aerobics class takes place...
Memorial Day in Bear Valley was honored with a ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial by Cub Lake. The service was opened by Commander, Bill Kritlow. The guest speaker that was Cindy M. Van Bibber, the director for Bakersfield National Cemetery. She spoke on National Cemeteries and their history, back to President Abraham Lincoln. An important part of the ceremony is the induction of those who have reported to their final station. Paul, Bellinger, US Navy Veteran, called out each name and John P...
An important election is coming up in June! The BVS Homeowner’s Association is having its annual vote for candidates for our board. Meet the candidates on Wednesday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Country Club. You will have an opportunity to ask questions about their goals. Your candidates this year are Peggy Bergman-Smith, Dain Hurst, Guy Munday and Jim Panek, who are re-running for three open seats. We also have two new candidates: Nick Beske and Joe Horswell. It’s important to get a quorum of eligible voters. If we don’t meet our quorum, the e...
Back in 1997, Gary Mazzola auditioned for the play, "The Odd Couple." He was taken on immediately by the director for that show, the late Royce Cox, and played Oscar, opposite Jerry Mulkins as Felix. That was Gary's first endeavor with the Tehachapi Community Theatre, and he has been active ever since in more acting roles, directing, producing and technically with lights and sound. Gary is a man of many talents. He played in "The Sunshine Boys," "Guys and Dolls," "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's...
The Todd Lander Pavilion at the Mulligan Room is open for business! On Saturday, April 2, a crowd of approximately 80 people gathered to commemorate the opening of the newly finished patio, and to memorialize the longest-standing BVSA board director in Bear Valley Springs’ history, Charles (Todd) Lander. Sadly, we lost Todd last August to cancer, but for the many years he served Bear Valley he was instrumental in coming up with ideas to save the association money on various projects. The b...
Spring is close. Daffodils are blooming, and even some poppies. Leaves will soon be bursting out on the trees. Before those leaves start showing their colors, check your oaks for mistletoe. Sometimes it’s subtle, with just a hint of a clump here and there. Some oak trees in our community are horrifically infested. A bad mistletoe infection will kill your trees and spread to your neighbors’ trees. Some varieties are more subject to mistletoe. We have blue oaks on our own property and some val...
The most interesting, exciting event in Bear Valley this past week was the swearing in of a new police chief. On Feb. 25, a large crowd gathered at the OTCC to see the transfer of power from our interim Police Chief, Jeff Kermode, to our new Police Chief, Dan Suttles. A large contingent of officers from his most previous place of command, Glendale, came along to wish him well. As well, several members of the CSD Board, CSD staff, some VIPS (Volunteer police), plus family and friends made up the...
February is here, the groundhog has forecast six more weeks of winter, so let’s settle in and enjoy the relaxed pace. One of the immediate issues is getting new candidates for the BVSA Board. Three positions will be open for competition. You likely have already been mailed application forms if you wish to apply. The board is always looking for capable candidates for director positions. Sandy Williams, Jim McCormack, or Bob Tebbe can give you information on the duties, or you can call the a...
Hello friends and neighbors. Welcome to 2022! It isn’t as pandemic-free as we would have liked by this time, but hopefully this year will see real progress against COVID-19. Meanwhile, we will carry on and do the best we can. One of the newest clubs in our community is the Bear Valley Springs Astronomy Club. If you are enchanted by the heavenly constellations, this club may be for you. They meet on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. They have numerous meetings, star parties, and p...
Well, friends and neighbors, as I write this, we are getting some much needed moisture in the form of snow. Let’s hope it keeps up for awhile. The CSD has been busy with leaks (seven) and road maintenance during the past month, as well as guardrail replacements on Deertrail Dr. It was budgeted for over $75,000 but was completed for under $65,000. The holiday season is here with a multitude of events to enjoy. But, especially, consider the New Year’s Eve party at the Oak Tree Country Club on Dec...
A fun new opportunity awaits. The Bear Valley Community Service District has been updating Bear Valley’s street signs to make them more reflective and safe. They started at the gate, working their way westward and upward. The old signs will be up for auction. If you want a piece of Bear Valley Springs history, you will have an opportunity to bid on the signs from your community. The proceeds of the auction will go to the road fund to speed up the purchase of new signs. To bid, go to w...
Early in October, local Bear Valley Springs veteran, William (Bill) Kritlow, flew on the 2021 Honor Flight from Kern County to Washington, D.C. The flight departed from Meadows Field in Bakersfield and flew to Baltimore International Airport. Each veteran is provided a guardian. Neil from Bakersfield was Bill's exemplary guardian. Bill had served in the army as an enlisted man from 1963-66. His Vietnam service began in 1965. As the plane taxied toward take-off, a fire engine sprayed a huge arc o...
The dog park in our community is still being improved. The Tailwaggers Group has raised $12,000 to purchase and put up a permanent dog park playground. Last year, they put in 25 trees to provide some much needed shade and the attractive signs you see displayed near it. With all the playground equipment, it will be called BVS Doggie Dream Park. One of the most instrumental people in getting this park started years ago was Katy Jacobson. Katy has since moved away but she is still actively...

The BVS CSD encourages us to get involved in our community. The opportunities are numerous, ranging from becoming a trained volunteer with CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), Red Cross or Salvation Army or connecting with an isolated neighbor (especially the elderly). During this dry summer we are more than ever potential victims of a fire. Also in CSD news, generators have been installed in seven of the 11 locations, so that people won’t be left high and dry due to a possible Public S...
