The American Legion Auxiliary, Tehachapi Unit 221, is pleased to award six of Tehachapi's outstanding youth with Good Deed Awards for 2017. The Unit held an award ceremony on Saturday, April 1, at the Tehachapi veterans Hall. Following the invocation by Auxiliary Chaplain Gwladys Peterson, Unit 221 Auxiliary President Linda Carmichael, Second Vice President and Children and Youth Chairman Gailmary Harper, and Past Department President Harriet Clendenin presented awards. The following honored guests also personally congratulated the recipients and presented awards:

• District 34 Assemblyman Vince Fong

• The Honorable Mayor Ed Grimes

• American Legion District 15 Commander David Graham

• American Legion Auxiliary District 15 President Zana Chaney

• American Legion Post 221 Past Commander Dennis Ragsdale

Bear Valley Springs veterans Association Commander Jim Rice

Recipients of these awards are:

Caleb Agold, who served the community by being a member of the Tehachapi Civil Air Patrol, by being active in the Cadet programs, Color Guard, and Honor Guard Units for Kern and Los Angeles County service and public events. Caleb attends Country Oaks Baptist Church and volunteers in its outreach programs. He has assisted many of his neighbors during fire evacuations.

Tabitha Cazares, who along with her older sister donated her beautiful hair to Locks of Love. Her older sister, an oncology nurse, has been donating hair for years. Tabitha told her parents, "I want to give my hair to the kids who don't have any because of cancer." The Highland Hair Salon donated the hairstyling fees.

Christian Douglas, who completed the rigorous Marine Corps Devil Pups training program, volunteers with the Tehachapi Salvation Army, has his own animal rescue foster care program in Alpine Forest near his home, and does whatever is necessary to locate an animal's owner.

Cody Hayes, who completed the rigorous Marine Corps Devil Pups training program, volunteers with the Tehachapi Salvation Army, and devotes his free time to help his elderly neighbors with housework and yardwork.

Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron 121 of Bakersfield leads off the ceremony.

Joshua Kilian, who participated in the Library of Congress veterans History Project by interviewing a Vietnam War veteran, is a member of the Tehachapi Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron 46, is involved in the cadet programs, Color Guard and Honor Guard units performing in Kern and Los Angeles counties' public events. He attends Stallion Springs Community Church where he is involved in youth programs, sound engineering, and community outreach.

Jack Schuyler, who participated in the Library of Congress veterans History Project by interviewing a Vietnam War veteran, volunteers with the Knights of Columbus charity programs for members of St. Malachy Catholic Church, where he attends, and is a member of Boy Scout Troop 3.

The ALA Unit would like to thank all those in attendance as well as Congressman McCarthy, Senator Jean Fuller, Supervisor Zach Scrivner, Bakersfield Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron 121, Dominoes Pizza, photographer Larry LaCom, Tanner Dyrness, Field Representative for Assemblyman Vince Fong and The Loop newspaper, for their kindness and generosity in making this event a success.
