2017 Brite Lake Fishing Derby scheduled for April 1

Nick Smirnoff (NPPA)

The Fishing Derby is returning to Brite Lake. The derby will be on April 1 and is presented by TVRPD. This is a fun event.

TVRPD, through the generous sponsorship of BHE Renewables and Lehigh, will be stocking Brite Lake the week of March 6 with 2000 Blue Gill and 450 Big Mouth Bass. This, along with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife Trout stockings, should make for a fun day of fishing at the Derby for the entire family. Day of Registration and pre-registered fishing bracelet pickup begins on April 1 at 5 a.m. Fishing lines are allowed into the water at 6 a.m. Derby participants can pay and register online at tvrpd.org, at the District Office Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. or on the day of the event at 5 a.m.

Cost is as follows:

$15.00 – 16 and over with California Fishing License (License will be verified day of onsite)

$10.00 – Child 15 and under

$45.00 – Family (up to 2 adults)

Entry and parking is free. There is no charge this year for entry. Enjoy a brite day at the lake.

$5 – for daily boat launch or $30 for season boat launch – boats launch at 6 a.m. (no gas motors)

TVRPD is committed to reinvesting in Brite Lake to bring the fish population back to a healthy level following the downturn due to lack of stockings by CDFW, as well as increase in cost and lack of available trout for purchase as a result of the drought.

Brite Lake will receive another stocking in May consisting of 2000 Red Ear Sun Fish and 1000 Mosquito Fish upon recommendation by the Professional Aquaculture Services (PAS) in Chico, Calif. The District will be using PAS in the 17-18 fiscal year and beyond to ensure Brite Lake rises to and remains a vibrant place for the Tehachapi Valley to fish, camp, play disc golf and relax.

Members of the Mondjian and Augstanyan family left Van Nuys at 3 a.m. to fish with their Grandfather Stephan at the 2015 Fishing Derby. Taking fishing to a new level as seen here, they have been coming to Brite Lake for over 16 years.

Along with the significant improvements TVRPD has made over the past year to Dye Natatorium, Aspen Builders Inc. Activity Center, Meadowbrook Park and Central Park, plans and funds are in place to install a playground at pavilion one and a nine-hole disc golf course at Brite Lake in the coming months. We are proud and honored to bring these improvements to the Tehachapi Valley.

As we look to the future of Brite Lake's infrastructure, goals are in place to improve the roads and restroom facilities. This will take a significant amount of private, public and grant funding in the coming years. Anyone who would like to contribute to enhancing Brite Lake as we move toward these goals, should contact the Tehachapi Parks Foundation on ways to contribute on a one-time or recurring monthly basis. All contributions are 100% tax deductible.

As always, our door is always open. Stop in and see the amazing things we have planned in 2017!

See you at the Brite Lake Fishing Derby on April 1, 2017.
