I invite you to take the time to create a "tantrum mat". Maybe your stress is just a sign that you need a break.

Supplies: Paint, markers, collage materials (whatever you have on hand), a surface you can decorate and use as your tantrum mat (such as heavy paper, canvas, or cloth), a sense of humor. Adult help when needed.

HOW TO MAKE A TANTRUM MAT

1. Step on the surface you selected for your mat, and trace around each of your feet. You can keep your shoes on or go barefoot.

2. Decorate your mat. Use your artistic license to decide what works best for you.

3. You might even think about painting it with your feet. That's kind of fun. The paint is squishy and cool between your toes. When the mat is dry it is ready to use.

4. When the need for throwing a tantrum is felt, place both of your feet on the mat's feet and jump rapidly up and down. Incoherent screaming is also permissible.

After you throw a tantrum, step back a little and relax.

You may find some wonderful alternatives and/or answers to whatever is causing your stress.

Or, maybe you will discover that it wasn't such a big deal after all.
