Tehachapi's new music store

Tehachapi is going to have a new music store. Located on Green Street across from the BeeKay Theater, Encore Music Services will initially sell, service, and rent pianos, as well as offering lessons for piano and violin. Encore owner, Craig Janssen, said he has plans to eventually be a source for all instruments and a center for instruction.

Janssen has had a business plan for a music store since 2003 but it rested on the sidelines while he was pursuing other ventures. Tehachapi residents may associate Janssen with his other local business, Tehachapi Fitness (also known as T-Fitness). For the last two years, T-Fitness has been a major sponsor of the Tehachapi Gran Fondo and other sports related events. Few people realize that Janssen is also a piano virtuoso and has played since the age of five. He is a six time Bach Festival winner at the Southern California regional level and was voted among the top five pianists by the California Music Teachers Association.

Janssen's music career was interrupted when he decided to play in a Junior Olympics Volleyball Tournament. He said that he has played international volleyball in 44 countries. In college he majored in business and minored in music and his musical talent landed him a job teaching for a major Southern California music company, eventually becoming a General Manager. It was during that time that he received his technical knowledge of the piano and he said that he has tuned pianos all over Southern California from Santa Monica to Monterey. Janssen added that he at one time tuned a six-piano concert where all of the pianos had to be identically tuned.

The availability of the space on Green Street has given Janssen the opportunity to make his dream a reality. He is now hunting for talented music teachers to help him expand his offerings.
