Introducing Have a Heart's new spokesdog

Have a Heart Humane Society

Brodie, a little red Chihuahua mix, who was born without eyes, is to be the new spokesdog for Have a Heart Humane Society, replacing the founding spokesdog, Oscar, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge this summer. The emotional announcement was made Saturday, October 3, at 10 am, just before the Gone To The Dogs 5K Fun Run/Walk began at Meadowbrook Park in Tehachapi.

Have A Heart's founder/president, Chelley Kitzmiller, remembers the tearful phone call from Brodie's former owner whose divorce was forcing her to give him up.

"It was so sad," Kitzmiller recalls. "The husband hated him and refused to keep him at his home with the other dogs, and the wife, who had raised him from a puppy, was moving to an apartment that didn't allow dogs."

Kitzmiller took Brodie (a Bakersfield dog) as her foster and was surprised by how comfortable he was in a new home with a herd of strange dogs. Her quest for a forever home was surprisingly easy. A Tehachapi resident fell in love with the little guy and wanted to make him part of her family, which included one other dog his size.

Have A Heart has been providing low cost spay/neuter services for eastern Kern County pet owners since January 2013. Proceeds from the Fun Run/Walk will continue those services.
