78th Annual Student Speaker Contest held by Lions Clubs

The Tehachapi Lions Club held the 78th Annual Student Speaker Contest at the club level on Feb. 5 at the Tehachapi SENIOR CENTER. The topic this year is "Water Conservation- How Can We Reduce, Recycle and Reclaim?". Our three contestants this year were Amber Chow of Desert High School, Julia Whelan of Tehachapi High School and Tulsi Mistry also of Tehachapi High School. Julia Whelan, a sophomore, won at the club level and went on to the Zone B Competition on Feb. 28 in Ridgecrest where she competed against two seniors, Kyle Robbins from Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest and Thomas Barragan from California City High School. Kyle Robbins won at the zone level and is now on to the Region Contest on Mar. 21 at the American Legion in California City. Cash prizes are awarded at each level with the final winner of Multiple District 4 receiving a total scholarship of $21,000.
