Oil artist, Vicki Braslow

As part of The Loop newspaper’s continuing Artist Series we feature oil artist Vicki Braslow.

What inspires you to paint?

Vicki: How can you not be inspired when you live here in Tehachapi. Natural beauty is everywhere here in the mountains.

Do you paint ‘plein air’ (painting outdoors) or work from photos?

Vicki: At one time I did a little plein air, but I found I like to take my time, work a little slower and a bit more presise. So, I work from photos that I have taken, or that my brother who is a professional photographer, might send me.

Why is oil paint your preferred medium?

Vicki: I just love oil paint. It gives such texture and flows onto the canvas. I love mixing colors, and the smell of the paint just makes me want to create.

Who has had a profound influence on your painting style?

Vicki: Well, for sure my teachers. Fellow artist Flo Sussell. Mel White, who just encourages artists to paint with feeling. I have taken lessons from Cyrene Crank and her encouragement has been most gratifying.

Tell us a little about where and how you paint.

Vicki: I am co-owner of our local driving school, so that occupies a great deal of my time. I do prefer the morning hours to paint. Like many artists I listen to music as I paint. I’m a fan of most all music except Jazz. I enjoy painting at Mel White’s Treasure Trove studio. Camaraderie with other painters helps to inspire me.

A last question: Why did you donate your work for auction at the upcoming Bear Valley Springs Art show and sale?

Vicki: The Cultural Arts organization in Bear Valley Springs is a wonderful group. It is such a reaffirming time to see all the artist that live here in the Tehachapi area. So many, so good, who whould have ever guessed at the number of artists living here. The camaraderie and mingling just makes me want to paint even more.

Thank you Vicki, we look forward to seeing more of your work at the show.

The 31st Bear Valley Springs Annual Art Show and Sale, hosted by the Bear Valley Springs Cultural Arts Association, will take place at the Oak Tree Country Club in Bear Valley Springs, Tehachapi. It will commence on March 28 with a “meet the artist” reception from 4 till 7 p.m.

Art remains hung for viewing and sale until April 5.
