Tehachapi Mountain Democratic Club: Phyllis Belcher given Clausen Award

The 2014 John Clausen Memorial Award was presented to Phyllis Belcher by Christopher Rush, president of the Tehachapi Mountain Democratic Club (TMDC).

The Clausen Award is given each year to an outstanding member for their contribution to the club and Democratic ideals.

Phyllis is a charter member of the club which was established by her late husband, Thurm Belcher in 1989. The club began in the Belcher home with a few like-minded individuals. As membership increased, meetings were moved to a number of different locations. This is the club’s 25th anniversary. With a few exceptions, the club currently meets on the first Thursday of each month at the Highway 58 Diner.

After being presented with the Clausen Award plaque, Phyllis recalled the early days of the club and the enthusiasm members displayed in attending conventions and in supporting candidates. She has served in various offices through the years, including club president. Phyllis remarked that she is proud of the progress the club has made in its support for the ideals expressed and promoted by the Democratic Party.

The John Clausen Memorial Award was established by the TMDC a few years back in memory of Mr. Clausen. He was an early member of the club, now deceased, who had a vast store of information regarding history and politics. He actively worked to support club activities and Democratic candidates well into his mid nineties.

This memorial award is presented annually by the TMDC.

Any registered Democrat is eligible

to join the TMDC. For information on the club, please call Christopher Rush at
