Curiosity on Mars: Acquiring samples, protecting cameras and learning about the Red Planet

With a Presentation at 11am by Andrew Bingham, Innovative Space Propulsion Systems – Project Engineer

Description: Learn about the design and testing of the Curiosity Mars Rover's Sample Acquisition/Sample Processing & Handling System, and the deployable dust covers which protected its cameras from being sandblasted during touchdown on Mars. Get the latest updates on the mission progress and a sneak peak at NASA's next rover which will be heading to Mars in 2020. Plane Crazy Saturday is at the Mojave Air & Spaceport on Sept. 20, from 10-2 p.m.

Bio: Andrew T. Bingham graduated from Clarkson University in 2007 and worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as a member of the Instrument Mechanical Engineering group until 2011; while at JPL, he worked on the sampling system and deployable dust covers for the Curiosity Mars Rover.

Bingham is currently a Project Engineer at Innovative Space Propulsion Systems, working to commercialize the NOFBX® (Nitrous Oxide Fuel Blend X) propellant and engine technologies developed by Firestar Technologies.

Bingham is also a founding member and serves on the board of directors of Mojave Makers, a Makerspace operating in Mojave in support of education in all aspects of making things – for engineering, the arts, science, and everything in-between.
